American River Pizza & Grill is simply one of the best places in the area to eat. It sports a clean and well appointed dining area that includes a great salad bar. It actually has table service provided by friendly and helpful staff which is increasingly rare for this style of restaurant. My last visit was on a busy day with large groups filling the place and everyone had happy faces because the service and food was so good. They have an extensive menu that includes burgers, sandwiches, pasta dishes, wraps, big salads, and really outstanding pizza. Everything is fresh and well prepared and delivered to your table with a smile. They even have breakfast which includes such favorites as Biscuits & Gravy, Chicken Fried Steak, and design your own omelets. Corner Kitchen is a Georgetown tradition and is located in the historic Ditch Co. building dating back to 1870. Originally built in 1853, the building burned down twice and was used for a number of other things until it became a restaurant in the early 1950's. You can still hear stories of how logging trucks used to line Main St. early in the morning so the drivers could have breakfast here. This is the real-deal of small town living complete with a well worn counter right in front of the grill. All your breakfast and lunch favorites are prepared as you watch and served by a smiling staff while you listen to the locals swapping stories. By the way, they now serve great home made pies. Located at 6265 Main St. in Georgetown. Open for breakfast and lunch from 6am to 2pm. (530-333-1630)
Marco's Cafe' is a favorite hangout with vacationers, kayakers, rafters, campers, and locals that is open only during the summer season. Located close to the American River, it is a small cafe' with walk-up windows for orders and pickup. Friendly customers gather on the outdoor covered patio area to eat and socialize, often into the night. It can get crowded on the patio on weekend summer nights which often feature live music. The menu favorites are a variety of delicious salads made with fresh local ingredients and Marco's famous pizza prepared on focaccia bread. Some specials include tofu curry, samosas, and other Italian items. They also have beer on tap and different labels rotate through. Located at 7221 Highway 49 in Lotus. (530-642-2025)
Sierra Rizing Cafe & Bakery is the creation of pastry chef Teal Triolo who has worked with celebrity chefs in San Francisco. Fortunately for us, she brought her great talent to Gold Country where she works her magic and runs a charming little cafe where you can sample her baked goodies as well as other items and have a great coffee drink. Now, they even have dinner! The cafe offers delicious breakfast items with daily creations based around local seasonal ingredients. Teal also creates incredible muffins, scones, croissants, desserts, and caramel sticky buns. They also do stunning wedding cakes and have custom catering available as well. Sierra Rizing is now also open for dinner and offers a great menu of sandwiches and paninis. Top that off with entrees like lasagna, tamales, or dinner salads, and you are set! Sierra Rizing also offers great items for the Holiday season to help make your entertaining extra special and save work. Check out the latest menu at their Facebook page. Take A Bite Deli is one of the best kept secrets of the Gold Discovery area. It is located in the back of the convenience store of a gas station right in Lotus. However, the locals and the seasonal crowds of river rafters know this little gem very well. Why? Simply because the food and service is just off-the-chart good! They have a cold case filled with pastries, cakes, bagels, ready made sandwiches, and other grab-and-go goodies. Then there is the regular grill and sandwich menu that has items like Tacos, Cheese Steak, BLT, Cold Sandwiches and their incredible burgers. It is well known among the locals that this tiny place has burgers to die for! I am not sure what it is, but these burgers are about as good as burgers get anywhere. You just have to try them to find out. Part of it is surely the hand made patties and the cheerful staff that make this happen! There is no inside seating, but you can grab a seat at some picnic tables in the shade outside. Kick back and enjoy! Located in the gas station at 7215 Highway 49 in Lotus, Tel. 530-642-8482. Open Mon. thru Fri. 10am to 3pm. Click here for Facebook page.
